In the spirit of the back to school season, this month we were pleased to donate a percentage of our proceeds to the Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy program. Both our Tanglewood and Rice stores participated in the effort to help reduce childhood hunger in Houston. According to the food bank, one in four southeast Texas children are at-risk of hunger. Many of these kids rely on school meals to provide breakfast and lunch during the school year. However, during breaks, such as weekends and holidays, many of these children go home to little or no meals. The Backpack Buddy program fills the gap by providing nutritious, child-friendly meals for students to take home over the weekend. As a mother of two school age children I was inspired by the great work of the Houston Food Bank and decided to orchestrate a fundraiser to contribute not only financially, but to raise awareness about the increasingly prevalent problem of child hunger in the greater Houston community.
We were so pleased that our customers came out to support this meaningful program and that Houstonia Magazine and the Houston Chronicle provided advance media coverage about the fundraiser. We are grateful to all of our friends and customers who shopped at our stores on August 10th; thanks to their patronage, we were able to make a nice donation that will provide 1,350 nutritious meals to students in need.
